Alaadeen Goes to Washington
Knowing of your interest in Mr. Ahmad Alaadeen's lifetime contribution to the preservation and stimulation of Kansas City Jazz, I thought you might be interested in a copy of my Congressional Record Statement recognizing his service to our community.

Mr. Alaadeen was recently selected by the Missouri Humanities Council as a recipient of the 2000 Governor's Humanities Awards. He is indeed a gift to the world.

Best regards,
Representative Karen McCarthy
Washington, DC

Thank You, JAM...
Thank you so much for giving us space in your October/November edition of JAM. The "Blind" Boone Park Auction was a success, and a wonderful time was had by all. Kyle Johnson led the Missouri Valley College Jazz Band during the early evening, and they were wonderful. And the Nold Brothers with Lisa Irle entertained us in the lounge with their early American sound, to everyone's delight. (We are hoping for repeat performances at our 2001 Music Festival!)

We raised over $9000 and were presented with a Missouri state flag (flown over the Missouri State Capital) to fly in the park at the dedication. It was a very exciting event for us and we appreciate your help.

Sincerely,
Sandra Irle

...and Thank You, KC!
Hello there Kansas City,
My name is Scott Tennyson and I recently visited your city on a business trip. Although it was my company that brought me to Kansas City, it is the people that I met and the music that I heard that will one day bring me back.

I live in Newport News, Virginia, an area with virtually no jazz scene whatsoever. Needless to say I was excited when I "stumbled" upon the American Jazz Museum at 18th and Vine. It was about thirty minutes from closing, but I decided to see it anyway because I was not sure that I would be able to find it again. On a whim I walked into the Blue Room, just to see what a jazz club looked like in person. After being asked to not take any more pictures, I ordered a beer and sat down to watch the band. I ended up staying all night. And I came back just about every other night they were open, for the remaining four weeks of my stay.

I also spent quite some time at the Grand Emporium. And I had the opportunity to participate (three times) in the Monday night jam sessions at the Blue Room as well as the Saturday night Mutual Musicians Foundation jam (twice). I'd never played drums until six in the morning before! It was quite an experience.

I am writing this letter to let you know that I had a great time in your wonderful city. I would like to thank all the employees and patrons of the Jazz Museum, the Blue Room, the Grand Emporium, and everyone involved with the Jazz Ambassadors, for keeping this great music alive.

I would also like to say a special "thank you" to all of the Kansas City musicians whom I met, listened to, and played with. While in college I gained a great deal of experience playing music. But the experience did all but kill the spirit of jazz for me. My experience in Kansas City has re-lit the fire for jazz and blues. I learned a lot there for work, but my musical experiences in the evenings and weekends gave me new friends and memories that I will never forget.

Once again, thank you very much; and I hope to see you all again soon.

Scott Tennyson
Newport News, VA
